MORTH: FASTags will be mandatory for all four-wheelers from January 2021
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on Saturday issued a notification saying that from January 1, 2021, FASTags will be mandatory for all four-wheelers.
The government has proposed to make FASTags compulsory for all four-wheelers, including older vehicles sold before December 1, 2017, to promote digital and IT-based payment of fees for toll collection.
It is worth noting that as per FASTag Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, registration of new four-wheelers is required from December 1, 2017.
FASTag is a prepaid tag that automatically deducts toll charges operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
The radio-frequency identification (RFID) -based tag, mounted on the windscreen of the vehicle, allows direct payment of toll charges from the prepaid or savings account associated with it and prevents the vehicle from toll plazas without cash transactions.
MoRTH has also mentioned that a valid FASTag will be mandatory when obtaining new third party insurance through an amendment to FORM 51 (Certificate of Insurance) to capture the details of the FASTag ID. It will come into force from April 1, 2021.
