Batting icon Sunil Gavaskar likened wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel to MS Dhoni after the latter made a stunning start in the third and fourth Test matches.

Dhruv Jurel, a wicketkeeper-batsman, is currently playing in the fourth Test at Ranchi. He made a significant impact by hitting his first half-century in the first innings for India. This came after Dhruv Jurel’s brilliant debut in Rajkot during the third Test. Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has compared Dhruv Jurel to MS Dhoni because of his performance in Ranchi. 

Gavaskar compared Dhruv Jurel’s game awareness to that of MS Dhoni and complimented Dhruv Jurel on his wicket keeping and batting abilities.

“Dhruv Jurel has batted brilliantly, of course, but he has also excelled at keeping wicket and working behind the wickets. Dhruv Jurel’s level of game awareness alone makes me believe that he is another MS Dhoni waiting to happen. I am aware that there will never be another MSD, but you have to acknowledge his mental clarity. In his live commentary, Gavaskar stated, “MSD also had that when he started, and Dhruv Jurel has that game-awareness, street-smart cricketer.”

With a final score of 90, Dhruv Jurel’s aggressive batting was a major factor in India’s total of 307, which cut England’s lead in the first innings to 46 runs. 

Before Kuldeep Yadav was removed by James Anderson, Dhruv Jurel and Yadav scored 76 runs to India’s total. When England received the second new ball, James Anderson bowled Yadav out. Yadav made a significant contribution with his 28 from 131 balls. Shoaib Bashir won his first five-wicket haul for England.

At this point, Anderson is two wickets short of the 700 Test wicket mark. A salute was given to Dhruv Jurel on his fiftieth birthday, presumably in memory of his father, a Kargil War veteran. When India fell behind England by 176 runs on the second day of the match, Jurel and Yadav’s collaboration proved essential in cutting down on their lead.

In the meantime, a video featuring Jurel praising Dhoni and their interactions during the 2021 Indian Premier League was released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

His emphasised Dhoni’s counsel to concentrate on monitoring the ball and playing, highlighting the influence of the legend’s counsel on his career as a cricket player.

“I was just observing him when I thought, ‘Is this MS Dhoni standing right in front of me?’ and I got up.” ‘Is this really happening?’ I had to ask myself, since it was my first encounter with him. I think that was in my first IPL season, which was in 2021,” Jurel said.
